The Felix Project has a wonderful team of volunteers who collect surplus food from suppliers and deliver it, free of charge, to charities and schools in London that prepare meals and provide food parcels for people who need them. One of our volunteers Will, asked us if he could write a blog for us. Here it is!
My motivation to volunteer and fund-raise
Volunteer blog by Will
I first heard about the Felix Project through my good friend and colleague, Marcus who works with me at an organic food shop called Daylesford in Notting Hill. We share a love of food and sustainability and enjoy serving healthy food that comes direct from the Cotswold's farm without decimating the environment. When Daylesford have surplus food, it goes to The Felix Project, who provide it to charities that work with a range of different people, including elderly, homeless, refugees, primary school children and their families. I am proud to be part of a company that is so responsible.
Marcus manages the relationship between Daylesford and The Felix Project and he's an ambassador for both organisations. He told me about a huge 500km bike ride taking place in Croatia to raise money for The Felix Project. I thought it was a great thing and wished the riders the best of luck. When Marcus suggested that I join in, I laughed and told him that I’ve never completed a bike ride longer than 10km, never mind 500km. But I really wanted to support The Felix Project, and so eventually decided that I would take part and give it my best shot. I bought a bike and lycra kit, and began training. I am happy to say that I have fallen in love with cycling and am feeling confident and excited to tackle this mammoth ride.
I truly love The Felix Project because it is such a simple and logical undertaking. I volunteer on the Central London Green Scheme, picking up food from delis and sandwich shops at the end of the day and delivering it to local charities. Food waste and hunger should not be allowed to co-exist, and The Felix Project is working towards a future in which nobody goes hungry.
For every one pound donated to the Felix Project, five pounds of good food goes to those who need it. This is why I'm taking on the challenge of a 500km bike ride.
